In-Person Service Returns to Hands of Hope Community Food Pantry

February 23, 2023

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and social distancing guidelines, the Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada Hands of Hope Community Food pantry had to limit our guests from coming into our food pantry for our in-person experience due to the high number volume of people.

On January 9th, we officially reopened the pantry to provide in-person services, allowing families and individuals to shop in a way that allows them to enjoy the dignity of shopping at a grocery store while getting the food they need but cannot afford.

Hands of Hope Community Food Pantry Mission

Catholic Charities Hands of Hope Food Pantry is a vital part of the organization's mission to serve those in need in their community. The pantry offers a safe and welcoming environment for individuals and families who are struggling to put food on their table. The goal of the pantry is to provide access to nutritious food, alleviate hunger, and help those in need maintain their health and well-being.

The pantry operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is open to anyone who needs assistance. The eligibility requirements for those accessing the pantry once every 30 days is to have a valid Government issued ID, a Clarity Card – if you do not have one we can assist you in obtaining one – and Proof of Residence with your name and residential address dated within 30 days of visit (recent rent receipt, utility bill, etc.). Visitors can choose food items in-person, selecting items that best meet their needs for their family. The pantry is stocked with a variety of non-perishable items, fresh produce, dairy products, and protein sources, when available.

In-person shopping at the pantry provides a sense of dignity and empowerment for those in need. It allows them to make choices about the food they receive and provides an opportunity for them to take an active role in their own well-being. The pantry staff is available to offer guidance and support, helping visitors navigate the selection process and ensuring that everyone gets nutritious food to eat.

How the Hands of Hope Community Food Pantry Helps Southern Nevada

The Hands of Hope Food Pantry also provides additional resources and support services to those in need. Visitors have an opportunity to find out about other resources available on our Catholic Charities campus and other organizations.  These services are aimed at helping individuals and families break the cycle of poverty and achieve long-term stability and self-sufficiency.

The pantry relies on grants and the generosity of the community to operate. Donations of food and money help keep the shelves stocked and allow the pantry to provide food to those in need. Catholic Charities also partners with local businesses, organizations, and individuals to collect food and financial donations, as well as to organize food drives and fundraising events.

Donating to the Community Food Pantry

Our food pantry relies on donations from individuals to help make a difference for those in need. There are several ways to donate to the Hands of Hope Community Food Pantry. You can make a monetary donation online, through the Catholic Charities website, or by mail. Monetary donations allow the pantry to purchase food and supplies, ensuring that they always have the resources they need to serve those in need.

You can also donate food items directly to the pantry. Non-perishable food items, such as canned meats, canned fruits and vegetables, pasta, rice, and cereal, are always in high demand. Fresh produce, dairy products, and protein sources, such as chicken, fish, and beans, are also needed. The pantry also accepts paper products, and personal care items, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, and soap.

When making a food donation, it's important to consider the nutritional value of the items you are donating. The pantry strives to provide access to nutritious food that will help those in need maintain their health and well-being. Foods that are high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats are less desirable since our goals are to offer nutritious options for our clients.

It's also important to make sure that food items are in good condition and have not passed their expiration date. The pantry only accepts food items that are safe for consumption.
