Preparing for Fall: Fire Safety Tips, Clothing Donation Near You, & More

September 8, 2025

As cooler fall and winter months approach, so do the seasonal needs of those in our community. Colder temperatures and less sunny days mean we need heavier sweaters and jackets, heaters, fire safety briefings, and more. In Las Vegas, it may not get down to single digital degrees, but we still must adjust for the colder climate. Learn about how to prepare yourself and help those around you prepare for fall, including coat donations near you and fire safety tips.

Catholic Charities Donations

At Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, we accept a variety of donations, adjusting our needs list based on the season. Each fall we ask for donations for non-perishable foods as well as men’s clothing and hygiene items for our Men’s Emergency Night Shelter. While we cannot accept women and children’s clothing donations due to space limitations, there are plenty of options for clothes donation near you. Whether you choose to host a donation drive, drop off heavier clothing at a nearby shelter, or donate to Catholic Charities, you can make a positive difference in the lives of people in your community this season.

Fire Safety Tips for Fall

Each autumn, it’s important to go over fire safety tips for your home and other spaces. In your home, having the smoke alarms checked to ensure the batteries are charged and the alarm is functioning is important. Checking these alarms helps protect you from unexpected fires and carbon monoxide, keeping you and those around you safe.

You can also make sure you have clean vents and filters for both your HVAC and if you have a dryer. By cleaning out or replacing these, you protect yourself and those who live with you from dust or air filter fires.

Along with checking your air vents, you should inspect and make sure your heating unit is working properly. When it’s working considerably more than in recent months, it can be more likely to break or catch fire. Keeping fire safety tips in mind, like looking over your heaters and HVACs, can help you keep your home safe from unexpected fires.

Other Ways to Prepare

In the fall and winter in Las Vegas, you can also begin preparing by getting or donating chapstick to combat the cool, dry air. You can also find hats to protect your head and face from harsh winds and chills. In case of snow and ice, consider getting salt for driveways or sidewalks by your residence. Knowing general fire safety such as where you can find the closest fire extinguisher and more can also help you feel prepared for the colder days ahead.

The winter may not hit southern Nevada like it does the northern area, but it’s always better to prepare yourself and your community in case of extreme weather.
