Ways to Give back this Holiday Season with Catholic Charities of Southern NV

December 5, 2022

The holidays are supposed to be a bright and merry time for everyone to celebrate. We at Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada want to spread holiday cheer to those who may be not as privileged as others. In addition to our usual volunteer programs and donations for our

Hands of Hope Food Pantry, we have a variety of different programs to donate or volunteer for this upcoming Christmas season.

We believe that no matter your situation you should still be able to celebrate the holidays. Of course, we can not lend a hand without the assistance and help of our volunteers or patrons. Here are just a few of the holiday events we have going on this holiday season that you can lend a helping hand with.

Winter Coat Drives

For individuals and families who are in need, Delivering Good works with hundreds of different nonprofit organizations and matches them with local Burlington Coat Factory stores. Burlington Stores donate coats to local families and individuals in need when people donate coats to them. Catholic Charities is honored to be one of the recipients of this winter coat drive.

Keeping warm can be difficult for those who may not have proper shelter, so that is why when you donate a gently used or brand-new winter coat to a local Burlington, we can provide them to those in need. Burlington will be accepting winter coat donations until December 24th.

We also have our One Warm Coat Drive where donation locations will be at the Brooks Brothers location inside the South Las Vegas Premium Outlets. The same idea stands, that we are providing warm winter coats to those in need. The One Warm Coat Drive will be accepting donations all the way into January.

So if you have any unworn new winter coats lying around, consider donating them and help keep others in need warm during these colder upcoming months.

Gifts for Gas

Get back when you give back this holiday season. Catholic Charities has partnered with 955thebull and Rebel Stores to give people a $15 gas gift card when they donate a new and unwrapped $15 toy. Giving toys to children on Christmas is a lot of people’s favorite way to give back during the holidays, so getting a little gift back for donating makes gifts for gas so unique.

If you are unable to donate toys, but still want to give back, we do need volunteers to help us hand out and sort toys.  Starting from December 5th to the 16th from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm we need volunteers for sorting out toys for our giveaway happening on December 17th.

Volunteering your time and effort is a great way to give back without having to worry about buying the right toy or having time to go and donate toys. We appreciate the help no matter if you choose to donate or volunteer, or even both! The holidays can be stressful enough, so we are appreciative of any help you can give.

The Giving Machine

Now donating things such as food, water, or even education is as easy as buying from a vending machine. The Light the World campaign has started a charity campaign where you can make a donation to global or local charities via the giving machine. Instead of candy or soda in the machine, there are different things you can donate to people in need all across the world.

Light the World is an initiative started by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to spread worldwide Christmas cheer.

The popular Giving Machines are returning to Las Vegas this holiday season starting from November 16th to January 1st and Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada is proud to be one of the recipients. If you find yourself wanting a unique way to make a donation, then the giving machine definitely is an easy and convenient way of giving back. Visit the machine's location at Downtown Summerlin (across from Macy’s) and spread the joy of giving back this holiday season.

Volunteer to Help with Holiday Meals

We understand that people may not have the means to donate, but donating is not the only way you can give back during the holiday season. Catholic Charities is having a couple of free holiday meals open to the general public and we could always use extra hands to help us.

You will be either serving meals to guests, taking dishes to breakdown stations, sanitizing tables, preparing dishes for washing, or handing out water to guests. Our free Holiday Meal will be served from 10 am to 11 am on December 25th within our St.Vincent Lied Dining Facility.

Volunteering can assure us that we have the extra helping hands to make sure that everyone is properly taken care of and has a warm meal this holiday season. The holidays can be hard and leave you feeling blue, but by volunteering you can get inspired by how wonderful and uplifting our community is. We always offer volunteer opportunities, in fact, we also have remote volunteer opportunities for those who may have an even busier schedule. Catholic Charities has different programs to volunteer with so there is something for everyone who wants to take the time out of their day to come volunteer with us.

The holidays are a magical and important time of the year. We at Catholic Charities will do our best to make sure that everyone within the community experiences a warm and happy holiday season. From warm winter coats to toy drives, to Christmas meals there are a lot of ways to spread the love this holiday season. From all of us at Catholic Charities, we are wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
