May 26, 2023

The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program is a federal program that provides nutrition education, food, and referrals to health and public agencies to pregnant women, children up to the age of five, and postpartum mothers who have low to moderate income levels. The program aims to improve the health of pregnant women, infants, and children by providing them with the necessary nutrition they need to grow and develop. In this blog, we will go over how the WIC program is an important resource for pregnant women or women who need help with infant and child nutrition.

Qualifying for the WIC Program

To qualify for the WIC program, one must be a Nevada resident, be pregnant or have a child under the age of five, and have moderately low income or receive TANF, Medicaid, or Food Stamps. Proof of income, residency, and identification for the mother and child is required during the application process.

The WIC program primarily caters to pregnant and postpartum women who have breastfed for at least 6 months or 1 year, as well as families or individuals with an infant up to 12 months old or a child aged 1 to 5 years old. Catholic Charities WIC Program is available to assist pregnant women and those with children up to 5 years old in need of proper nutrition and meals.

WIC Program at Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada

Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada provides the WIC Program and is happy to offer this service to the community. The program is available at two offices located in Henderson and the Catholic Charities Main Campus, and provides a variety of services to eligible families. The  WIC program offers nutritional food items that are rich in protein, calcium, iron, and vitamins A and C, which includes milk, cheese, breakfast cereal, eggs, whole wheat bread, brown rice, peanut butter, and canned fish and legumes. These nutritional items can be acquired at the Catholic Charities campus if  you are enrolled in the WIC program with Catholic Charities. Nutrition education and counseling, as well as breastfeeding education and support, are also provided to new mothers who may need additional information on how to breastfeed and provide the best care for their babies.

The WIC program also offers referrals to health and public agencies to ensure that families receive the necessary help to take care of their children. It is important to note that since the program is federally funded, the Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada cannot accept donations from individuals, but other services are available for those enrolled in the WIC program.
